GHAZIABAD: A Nigerian national was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly swindling people of several lakhs of rupees after promising them huge quantities of gold won through a fake lottery system. The accused, identified by police as Friday (34), was living in and operating from Tilak Nagar of Delhi on a valid passport and visa for the past few years .Friday introduced himself to his prospective victims as a representative of an automobile major. He sent congratulatory emails to people, whom he befriended through social media, saying that they have won gold in a lottery.“He would ask the people who responded to his emails to deposit money in his accounts saying that their gold consignment was stuck for want of custom duties which need to be cleared. He created a number of fake email IDs that he used to operate temporarily. The money that he used to collect was sent to Nigeria in regular instalments,” said Ghaziabad SSP Vaibhav Krishna. According to police, Friday had left India around a year ago but he returned around six months back. He was nabbed by surveillance mounted by the cyber cell of Ghaziabad police . “He seems to be part of an international fraud syndicate that dupes people through online frauds,” Krishna added.
