GHAZIABAD: A 30-year-old BSF constable was shot dead on the campus of a private school on Monday morning, allegedly by a batchmate and colleague. The two, according to other BSF officials, had fought twice the previous night and once again in the morning.Jagpreet Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur in Punjab, was shot at least thrice on the campus of Bal Bharati Public School in Brij Vihar where a company of 100 BSF constables and officers has been put up as part of security measures for the Kisan Kranti Yatra. The shooting took place around 6am. No student or school official was present on the campus but classes were held later in the day as usual even as the BSF detail remained on campus and policemen were present all over, triggering concern among anxious parents.Sources said Jagpreet and the accused Ajit Singh — also a constable from Pathankot in Punjab — were batchmates during their BSF training in 2012. Sources said the two had fought after dinner on Sunday night. The first quarrel broke out when the two had downed a couple of drinks just after dinner, and they fought again around midnight. When Jagpreet was leaving for sentry duty in the morning, the two had a heated argument again, following which Ajit got his Insas rifle issued from the armoury and pumped three bullets into his colleague.Ajit was overpowered by other constables and handed over to police along with the weapon. Jagpreet was rushed to Yashoda hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. He suffered gunshot wounds on the right side of his head, right midriff and right thigh. Ajit was arrested on a complaint by the company commander. An FIR was registered against him under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.“Ajit and Jagpreet had a quarrel shortly before midnight. A little later, Ajit had to leave for sentry duty when the duo had a fight yet again. He returned in the morning when Jagpreet was getting ready to leave. They had a quarrel again, following which Ajit shot Jagpreet. The reason behind the quarrel is not known,” Ghaziabad SP (city) Shlok Kumar said. The BSF company stationed at the school is from the 95 Battalion in Gurgaon’s Bhondsi. The company of 100 members, headed by assistant commandant Ripu Daman, had arrived at the school around 5pm on Sunday and had been accommodated inside two halls. “We are not sure why the duo had a quarrel. The exact sequence of events is being investigated,” said Arun Sharma, a BSF spokesperson.Police said the company would continue to be stationed at the school until their assignment in Ghaziabad was over. Classes were held later but there was anxiety among parents, who thronged the main gate of the school and voiced concern whether the campus was safe.“I was scared after seeing a host of cops and BSF personnel at the school gate after my son had left for classes. We later learnt that a BSF constable had been shot. But we are yet to receive any formal intimation from the school,” said Mukesh Jain, a parent. The school management did not respond to calls for a comment.
