Panel to stop sewer flow into natural drain

GHAZIABAD: The municipal commissioner has constituted a four-member committee to check discharge of sewer water from Bhowapur village and adjoining areas into the storm water drain in Sahibabad . The case dates back to 2016 when KARWA filed a petition in NGT seeking to stop discharge of waste water from Bhowapur village and adjoining areas into Sahibabad drain. However, after NGT’s order, the committee will again conduct a survey of these flats,” said Singh. The NGT had then formed a committee of Central Pollution Control Board and UP Pollution Control Board to look into the compliance of its order. But, the green tribunal instead chose to give some more time before taking a decision on the contempt plea.The NGT had given municipal commissioner one month’s time to submit a plan of action and two months for compliance.

The move comes close on the heels of the National Green Tribunal reprimanding the civic body for not taking adequate action on the issue.“A four-member team comprising the municipal corporation’s chief engineer, additional municipal commissioner, general manager of water works department and an official Jal Nigam have been formed which will ensure compliance as per the orders of NGT,” said municipal commissioner CP Singh.“As per our earlier survey, all flats in Kaushambi township has sewer connectivity, and to my knowledge, waste water from these flats goes straight into sewer drain and not into Sahibabad storm water drain. However, after NGT’s order, the committee will again conduct a survey of these flats,” said Singh. The committee will also look for ways to ensure sewer connectivity to Bhowapur village.The NGT order had come on a contempt plea filed by Kaushambi Apartments Residents Welfare Association (KARWA) which had alleged that municipal corporation did not fully comply with NGT’s earlier order. The contempt plea had sought municipal commissioner’s imprisonment.
