“It was on Saturday that we released 18 cusec of water into Hindon river which has now reached Ghaziabad and part of it has also been cleansed near Hindon barrage. As per tradition, devotees standing knee-deep in these waters offer obeisance to rising and setting sun.The societies and various RWAs have also converted their swimming pools into makeshift Chhath ghats for the puja. I am sure this time around devotees will not face pollution problem while performing puja in the river,” said Neeraj Singh, executive engineer, UP irrigation department. Sanjay Singh, a resident of Indirapuram, said, “In Shipra Sun City like every year, we have converted our swimming pool into Chhath ghat where we will offer obeisance to sun god.” In Amarpali Village society and Shipra Shrishti society also, swimming pools have been converted into temporary ghats. But it is the banks of Hindon river where majority of devotees throng for the puja despite the fact that the river remains very polluted. The irrigation department, however, claimed that it has already released water into the river. GHAZIABAD: The district administration and Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) have made elaborate preparations for Chhath puja on the banks of Hindon river While a number of temporary Chhath ghats have been made available for the puja on Tuesday and Wednesday, the irrigation department has released 18 cusec of water in the river to wash away pollutants.“On Sunday, along with Union minister & local MP Gen VK Singh and GMC officials, I personally inspected the Chhath ghats along Hindon river near Arthala,” mayor Asha Sharma told TOI on Monday.“We found the arrangements satisfactory as the ghats have been cleaned and makeshift bathing points and other facilities have been attended to so as to cater to hundreds of devotees on Tuesday and Wednesday,” she added.Apart from the ghats, the GMC has also made arrangements at more than 60 parks and open grounds where temporary trenches have been dug up and filled with water ferried by GMC’s tankers to facilitate puja.
