Have asked for Ghaziabad sailor’s US autopsy report, says firm

GHAZIABAD: Nearly 22 days after the death of a Ghaziabad- based sailor in US, the managing director of the Mumbai-based maritime company, for which the sailor worked, said he had requested the Indian consulate in the US to talk to officials in that country and expedite the process to issue an autopsy report.The family of the sailor, Sultan Ahmad, has sought a second autopsy and the district administration has said it needs the original report before starting the process.Captain Sachin Parashar of VR maritime company said on Thursday that the rescue operation to retrieve the body of Ahmad was started six days after his death on November 1 due to “technical issues”. By then, the body had decomposed completely. “The area where he died was cordoned off the next day and a recovery team from North America was requested to retrieve the body. Because of holidays in Houston, the recovery team went to the ship on November 4 and conducted a recee. The body was retrieved on November 6 and sent to a funeral home in Louisiana . I personally went to the ship to coordinate with the authorities,” Parashar said.The MD said he was in touch with Ahmad’s family through email. “We are providing them help in claiming the insurance money. We have requested the Indian consulate to ensure the autopsy report is released as early as possible. The family has also claimed that the death certificate provided to them is not original. I have urged the consulate to clear the air in this,” Parashar said.According to company officials, Ahmad (28) had died due to intoxication from excess carbon dioxide aboard an offshore rig off the coast of Cameron around 10.45pm on November 1.Ahmad’s family was informed about his death on November 3, but they claimed that the officials gave them three different versions of what caused the death.
