GHAZIABAD: The second phase of Delhi Metro in Ghaziabad could begin passenger services next month as funds that couldn’t be released till the Centre gave a formal approval will now be available.The nod to the Red Line Extension (New Bus Stand to Dilshad Garden), and the central government’s contribution of Rs 324.87 crore for the project, came at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.This now paves the way for the commissioner of metro railway safety (CMRS) to inspect the corridor, work on which is complete. The CMRS inspection, according to officials, will require around 10 days. The inspection dates will, however, be set by the CMRS.The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is hopeful that by mid-February, the project will be ready for commissioning. “We are told that after CMRS inspection, the operation of this corridor will start by mid-February. The state government can decide on its inauguration,” said Kanchan Verma, vice-chairperson, GDA. The Noida Metro (Aqua Line) will be inaugurated on January 25, more than a month after it received the safety certification from the CMRS.It was in June 2014 that GDA and DMRC signed an MoU for the extension of the Rithala–Dilshad Garden line to New Bus Station in Ghaziabad. The 9.4km route is entirely elevated and has eight stations — Shaheed Nagar, Raj Bagh, Rajendra Nagar, Shyam Park, Mohan Nagar, Arthala, Hindon river and New Bus Station. The corridor stands on 400 pillars. DMRC, which built the corridor, began trials in August last year.The cost of the project has varied since 2014. It was Rs 1,770 crore that year after which DMRC came up with revised DPR pegging the project cost at Rs 2,210 crore. But final the completion cost came to Rs 1,781.21 crore.Construction of this corridor was a major challenge as it runs along the busy GT Road which has non-stop traffic throughout the day. This corridor will pass through the Sahibabad Industrial Area as well. DMRC expects a daily ridership of about 20,000 passengers.
