GDA ropes in Institute of Transport India to prepare walkability plan in and around metro stations

“The IUT is expected to submit report by February and based on its suggestions we will try to incorporate in our plan,” said Verma. “This is a long-term plan and for that we will have to alter road and pavement infrastructure as will be suggested by IUT,” added Verma.Explaining the importance of equipping metro stations with walkability infrastructure, Verma said that it will also reduce traffic congestion around metro stations. GHAZIABAD: The commissioning of Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda metro corridor is expected in February and prior to this the Ghaziabad Development Authority GDA ) has roped in Institute of Transport India (IUT) to prepare a long-term walkability mobility plan for commuters in and around all eight metro stations in this route.“While traffic mobility plan near metro stations in being taken care of by Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) we intend to make these stations pedestrian friendly for commuters,” said Kanchan Verma, vice chairperson, GDA. “This we plan to do by creating pedestrian infrastructure along 300 meter radius of all eight metro stations and for that we have hired IUT," added Verma.The IUT has been made available data required in terms of metro station areas and also details of the area in and around it. “If we give them an option of walking down to metro stations say 300 meters away from it by creating infrastructure that enable them unhindered access to it than vehicles ferrying commuters will not flock near stations and this way we can avoid traffic jam,” said Verma.The CRRI for seamless traffic movement around metro stations had suggested a separate lane near both sides of metro stations which will be created by bifurcating exiting road by jersy barrier which will be used exclusively for metro commuters while a part of the lane will be used for parking.
