GHAZIABAD: A 16-year-old girl was crushed to death by a truck in Sahibabad when she was walking to catch an autorickshaw to school on Saturday morning. The girl, Rakhi, was a resident of Panchsheel Colony in Sahibabad. The accident happened around 7am.Family members of the girl and local residents blocked the Bhopura-Loni road for three hours, demanding immediate arrest of the driver and helper. When police tried to control the situation, the protesters turned violent and pelted the cops with stones. Many of the 40-odd cops deployed to diffuse the situation were injured. The girl’s family started a protest around 7.30am and continued for around three hours. The protest was lifted after the Loni tehsildar assured the girl’s family that the truck driver would be arrested soon.Police said Rakhi, a student of Class IX, was going to her school in Delhi when the accident happened. “She was walking along with two of her friends to an auto-rickshaw stand when a truck, overloaded with sand and coming from Loni, crushed her under the wheels. The driver and helper fled the spot, leaving behind the vehicle,” a police officer said.Rakhi’s father Girish Prasad, who works as a daily-wage labourer in a private factory, said: “I wanted to give a better life and education to my children. So, I shifted here and had been working hard for it. Rakhi wanted to become a lawyer, but all her dreams have now been shattered.” The family, originally from Bihar, has been living in Ghaziabad for the past 20 years.Devender Kumar, a resident of Panchsheel Colony, said that a month ago, the district administration had removed a divider separating the main road from their colony. Since then, at least five accidents have taken place on this stretch. “We also want the GDA to install a traffic signal at the spot so that people can easily cross the road. Traffic police should also be deployed here for monitoring the movement of vehicles,” he added. The residents claimed a divider was present at the spot but it had been removed by the administration during the Norwegian Prime Minister’s visit a month ago. “We block the road and demanded immediate action against the accused. We also want that a divider and traffic signal be installed at the spot so that chances of accidents can come down,” said Salman, a resident.Umakant Tiwari, the Loni tehsildar, agreed that the divider had been removed during Erna Solberg’s visit to Ghaziabad. “The divider was removed by the administration so that her convoy could move smoothly. I have already spoken to senior officials in the GDA. The divider would be installed back. A traffic signal will also be installed at the spot,” Tiwari added. Jitender Kumar Singh, the SHO of Sahibabad police station, said police had seized the truck but the driver managed to flee. “We have lodged an FIR against unknown persons under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC,” he added.
