Officials in Noida said there was initial enthusiasm among residents on the first two days of the tika utsav, but turnouts began coming down from Tuesday onwards. “Also, since navratri began on Tuesday, a majority of people chose to remain indoors for the rituals,” said a source in the health department.

Asked about the low turnout, Ghaziabad’s chief medical officer, NK Gupta, said, “Since most of our manpower is involved in Covid duty, it could be the reason why we fell short of the target.” In Noida, 9,170 people took the jabs on Wednesday. Of them, 1,650 people were aged over 60 years. Vaccinations were conducted in 91 centres in total — 50 government facilities and 41 private ones. “In all, 5,080 people were inoculated at government centres and 4,090 people were vaccinated in private hospitals in Noida,” said Dr Neeraj Tyagi, the district immunisation officer.

Dr Tyagi urged everyone to come forward and get themselves vaccinated. “Against an overall target of 1.62 lakh for the month of April, we have vaccinated 97,379 people. We urge all those eligible to take the vaccine shots as early as possible,” he added. In Ghaziabad, 10,903 people were vaccinated on Wednesday. Of them, 7,733 were in the 45-plus age category, while 3,000 were above 60 years of age. The drive was held across 67 government and 29 private centres.

Meanwhile, UP crossed the one crore vaccination doses-mark with over 2.27 lakh jabs on Wednesday. According to data from the Co-WIN portal updated till 9pm, as many as 1,00,23,991 doses of the vaccine have been given in UP. With this, UP became the third state in the country to have dispensed one crore-plus doses. Maharashtra and Rajasthan have already crossed the mark.
