In April, a total 1,54,954 samples were tested and 12,540 positive cases were detected.
In the first three months of the year, the numbers were significantly lower.

While 87,810 samples were tested in March and 607 people tested positive (positivity rate of 0.7%), in February, of the 59,758 samples tested, 175 were positive. The positivity rate was 0.3% that month. In January, 69,310 samples were tested and 503 were positive with a positivity rate of 0.7%. “The trend is alarming and given the positivity rate in May so far, the figure might be over 15% by the end of the month,” said an official from the health department. “In just four days, about 4,000 new cases have been reported from the district and if it is compared to the corresponding figures for any previous months this year, it is abnormally high,” he added.

The recovery rate has also taken a hit. “In April, it was 82.8% and in March and February, the figures were 97.8% and 99.4%, respectively,” the official said. The death rate in April was 0.5% (106 deaths) while it was 0.4% in March and 0.4% in February. Between May 1 and 4, the district has recorded 69 deaths.
