GHAZIABAD: A bizarre accident claimed two lives on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway on Thursday. Three youths on a bike sustained critical injuries after they collided with a truck that the bikes driver didnt notice because he was apparently distracted by the sight of an aeroplane next to the expressway at Masuri. The decommissioned aircraft now houses a restaurant, Hawa Hawai. The sight of the plane apparently distracted the trio on the bike, who failed to notice what was coming up in front of them. The deceased are Rahul (23), a resident of Badalpur, GB Nagar and Shivnanand (22), a resident of Bamheta in Ghaziabad. Sagar (21), a resident of Badalpur, was severely injuries and is still undergoing treatment in Delhis GTB Hospital.ADCP (traffic) Ramanand Kushwaha said the three were friends and were returning from Meerut after attending a wedding function. "Around 11pm on Wednesday, they were crossing the aeroplane-themed restaurant and were distracted by the sight of the plane and hit the truck moving ahead. The youths were taken to District Joint Hospital in Sanjay Nagar by NHAI ambulance where Rahul succumbed during treatment. The two other youths were referred to GTB Hospital for treatment, but Shivnanand succumbed during treatment," Kushwaha said. The officer added that at the time of the accident, only the driver had a helmet on. "DME is a high-speed expressway on which operation of two- and three-wheelers and other slow-moving vehicles have been banned. Tripling on a bike on the speedway with no helmets on proved fatal. From what we have found, the men were also driving the two-wheeler rashly," police said. This is not the first time when people, distracted by the aeroplane-themed restaurant, met with accidents on the expressway. On August 18, a 26-year-old youth and his mother were killed after a truck hit their bike from behind. At the time of the incident, Vikash and his mother, travelling from Meerut to Gurgaon, were looking at the restaurant, police said.On September 26, a Delhi-bound roadways bus veered off the expressway and rammed into the railings along the speedway before crashing into the green belt. The incident took place just 500 metres from the restaurant. Police investigation revealed that the driver was distracted after seeing the aeroplane. In September, the traffic police department also wrote to NHAI to highlight that several commuters slow down to see the decommissioned aeroplane and are hit by vehicles approaching at high speed from behind. Police also claimed the area had become a new selfie point. The ADCP traffic told TOI that NHAI had given the land to the restaurant. "So, we have asked the Authority, through a letter, to do something about it and install CCTV cameras in the area so that if any person stops their vehicle for view or selfie, then the Dasna monitoring station can promptly alert the traffic cops nearby." NHAI officials could not be reached for comment.
