Deepfake case: Police begin to trace calls, trail of money

GHAZIABAD: Police said on Thursday they have sought details on the caller from the telecom service provider of the mobile phone number from which a senior citizen was extorted with a retired IPS officers deepfake.They have written to the bank for details of the account to which the 76-year-old man had transferred money to.A case was registered at the Kavi Nagar police station under the IT Act after a woman alleged that her father, Govindpuram resident Arvind Sharma (76), was extorted of Rs 74,000 by criminals who allegedly used a video featuring the face and voice of former ADG in the UP Police to threaten the elderly man.Cops said it was the first case involving deepfake, AI-generated content, to be recorded in Ghaziabad. According to the complaint, Sharma – a clerk at a private firm – had recently made a Facebook profile, on which he got a video call. He accepted it, but cut the call after seeing a nude woman on the other end.An hour later, he got a video call on his WhatsApp account. In this, the caller in a police uniform threatened to leak Sharmas video if he didnt pay up. This extortion went on, until Sharmas family found out and approached cops.Cops said on Thursday they are taking the help of cyber experts and will also reach out to Meta, Facebook and WhatsApps parent company, for details about the fraudsters accounts.So far, initial investigation has led police to two mobile numbers – one (9991668357) that was used to send the deepfake video, and the other (7206144207) to give instructions on transferring money.The accused would introduce himself as Dwarka SP and in the other number as Sanjay Singh, cyber cell inspector, said Kavinagar ACP Abhishek Srivastava.Sharmas daughter managed to record a video when the extortion call came and ran a Google search that showed the identity of the man in the video as former ADG Prem Prakash. The retired officer had told TOI he was made aware of the deepfake only on Wednesday.
