GHAZIABAD: A pre-natal sex determination test centre running inside a diagnostic lab was busted by a team of police and administration officials in Ghaziabad on Monday. The laboratory, Balaji Diagnostics , is located in Loni.The premises of the laboratory was sealed following the raid while a technician, Ravinder, who was caught red-handed, has been taken into custody by police. The team, which also comprised three doctors, raided the laboratory at around 6 am on Monday. A husband-and-wife couple had been used as decoy through a middleman to conduct sex determination tests."A team of doctors from Haryana had complained to the Ghaziabad district administration that diagnostic centers in Loni were being used for sex determination tests upon pregnant women belonging to their state. The doctors were part of the raiding team on Monday. The laboratory accepted the fees of Rs 3,500 and conducted the test upon the woman," SDM (Loni), Atul Kumar, told TOI.The test fees were paid in cash with a Rs 2,000 currency note and three notes of Rs 500 denomination that had been previously marked by the team. These notes were recovered from the laboratory.An FIR in the matter has been registered in Loni under relevant sections of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994. "The owner of the laboratory, Dr Nikunj, is absconding after the incident. The technician is being questioned to find out their network of operations," Loni circle officer, DSP Shrikant Prajapati, told TOI.
