GHAZIABAD: A 51-year-old man was killed when an overspeeding school of DPS Ghaziabad hit his bicycle from behind on Meerut road on early Tuesday morning. Shiv Shankar died on the spot while the bus driver fled the scene. At the time of incident, the bus was ferrying about 15 students who according to the school administration did not suffer any injuries. A case has been registered against the driver identified as Suresh Tyagi who has not yet surrendered. The school, meanwhile, says that the driver was their contractual employee.Shiv Shankar, resident of Nandgram who worked as a turner in a factory situated at Meerut road, was on his way to work on his bicycle. "Near Sriram Piston he was hit from behind by an overspeeding school bus belonging to DPS Ghaziabad," said Umakant, Shiv Shankar's landlord. "He died on the spot while the driver fled the scene," added Umakant.Immediately, after the accident a crowd gathered and blocked Meerut road in protest and it was cleared for traffic only after police reached the scene and pacified protesters. "The bus was being driven at a very high speed and after hitting Shiv Shankar, who fell by the roadside, it crushed him under its front wheel; he died on the spot," said Rupesh Kumar, an eyewitness. "There were small children inside the bus when the accident took place. They were shocked, but fortunately children suffered no injuries," added Rupesh.The school administration, meanwhile, has denied that the bus was over-speeding. "It was an unfortunate incident, but the bus was not over-speeding which we confirmed from a teacher who was present in the bus at that time," said Sanjay Agarwal, vice-principal, DPS Ghaziabad. When asked if driver Suresh Tyagi was their regular employee, Agarwal said, "The bus belongs to school, but the driver was their contractual employee."The bus has been impounded and an FIR lodged against the driver. "A case under sections 279 and 304(a) has been lodged against the driver who till evening had not surrendered," said Vinod Kumar Pandey, SHO, Sihani Gate police station.
