PANAJI: In a bid to create hyper-local libraries for children and to promote and preserve children’s literature in Konkani, the Konkani Bhasha Mandal (KBM) has said that it would translate over 100 books to the Konkani language. In pursuit of this quest, the KBM has partnered with StoryWeaver, an open source digital platform of multilingual children’s stories.The collaboration will see 25,000 copies of 50 Konkani books distributed free to 250 schools in Goa, reaching out to thousands of children.“After knowing that there exists a website with a plethora of stories which can be used by teachers and parents for children, we started translating them to Konkani,” said Chetan Acharya , president of he KBM. “We have also conducted many workshops for college-going students on how they can translate a story from StoryWeaver. We will certainly have a long and fruitful partnership.”StoryWeaver, which is an initiative of non-profit publisher Pratham Books , currently hosts over 7,000 stories in 105 languages. Apart from Konkani, it is also pursuing similar projects in Bhoti and Haryanvi. These initiatives were launched to mark International Mother Language Day, which was observed on February 21.
