Goa Dairy farmers call off hunger strike

PONDA: Following an assurance from Goa Dairy chairman to roll back the hike in cattle feed prices, agitating farmers, on Friday, called off their hunger strike. The farmers were on a fast unto death strike from Thursday to build pressure on the dairy to get their demands met.Goa Dairy chairman Rajesh K Phaldessai said the roll back will be subject to directors’ agreement. The farmers contended that hike was unjustified as the dairy has its own cattle feed plant at Mharvasaddo in Usgao, so as to provide it at subsidized rates to milk producing farmers in the state.A group of Congress leaders, including Goa Pradesh Congress Committe president Girish Chodankar, Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, Curtorim MLA Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco, visited the agitating farmers and extended their support to them. They also met Phaldessai. “I have told them that it will not be possible to meet any other demand of theirs,” Phaldessai said, adding that a special meeting of board of directors has been called on Saturday, which could be postponed as some of the directors are out of station.Goa Dairy had increased the cost of cattle feed by Rs 2.50 per kg from October 2017.
