Tamil Nadu tourists drown while clicking selfies near Goa beaches

Two tourists from Tamil Nadu drowned while clicking selfies in the Arabian Sea in Goa beaches, the police said on Monday. Eight tourists from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu visited the Baga beach in North Goa district on Saturday evening. Ranganathan from Vellore in Tamil Nadu, drowned in the waters, he said. While both the tourists are from Tamil Nadu, the death took place in two separate incidents - one on Sunday morning and the other on Saturday evening, the police said. In May, the Goa government had issued an advisory asking tourists to refrain from swimming in sea waters along the beaches for four months starting June 1.

As they were clicking selfies on their mobile phones, a strong sea wave hit them," Calangute police inspector Jivba Dalvi said. While two of the group members swam to safety, the third person, identified as Dinesh Kumar. Ranganathan from Vellore in Tamil Nadu, drowned in the waters, he said. The body was fished out later. In yet another incident, four tourists from Tamil Nadu went to enjoy at a rocky patch in the waters at Siquerim beach near Fort Aguada in North Goa on Sunday morning, Dalvi said. While they were clicking pictures on their phones sitting on the rocks, one of them got swept away in the strong sea waves and drowned, the police official said. The deceased was identified as Sasikumar Vasan. In May, the Goa government had issued an advisory asking tourists to refrain from swimming in sea waters along the beaches for four months starting June 1. The state government bans swimming and other water sports activities during the monsoon from June to August each year as a precautionary step. Also, a firm appointed by the Goa government to provide lifeguards at beaches recently said that red flags will be put up at beaches in the state to warn people about dangers of wading or swimming in the sea during the monsoon.
