Russian grows weed in Siolim house held

PANAJI: A Russian national caught growing marijuana in a greenhouse set up inside a bungalow at Siolim in North Goa, was arrested by Goa police on Saturday. Police arrested his compatriot, also living in the bungalow, for illegal possession of charas. “We watched the house for long before conducting today’s search,” he said.Police had to effect forceful entry as the accused refused to open the door. Kashyap said eight marijuana plants were found.Kashyap said both accused came to Goa in 2015 and had been living in hotels, mostly in North Goa, until recently. The raiding team waited for 20 minutes before breaking the door open, police said.The bungalow in question has two floors and the accused had set up the greenhouse on the first floor.

Police arrested his compatriot, also living in the bungalow, for illegal possession of charas. Narcotic substances worth Rs 10 lakh were seized. Police said the accused catered to a mostly Russian clientele.SP (crime) Karthik Kashyap told STOI that the two Russians — Maxim Moskichev and Artem Seregin — had been living in the house for the past five months. Moskichev has been arrested for growing marijuana while Seregin has been arrested for illegal possession of charas, he said.The SP said that upon receiving information about a foreigner growing marijuana in the house, a team maintained vigil and observed a lot of movement. “We watched the house for long before conducting today’s search,” he said.Police had to effect forceful entry as the accused refused to open the door. They had come on a one-year tourist visa, which expired two years ago, the SP said, adding that a separate case will be filed against them at the local police station for overstaying. Both had come to the state via Cambodia, he said.The owner of the house had submitted a verification form at the police station, police said.Both accused will be produced before the judicial magistrate first class to seek police custody to further investigate the case.Last year, Calangute police arrested two for growing cannabis at Candolim.
