Dugup trenches at Curchorem pose health safety hazard

Quepem: Three trenches dug up behind the Curchorem bus stand and in front of commercial cum residential buildings to erect a temporary shed for 16 shopkeepers have become breeding sites for vector borne diseases, as water has been accumulating in these pits since the onset of monsoon.Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) had evacuated all shopkeepers from the old dilapidated building. “They pose a danger to children,” Vinesh Prabhudessai, a local, said.Public toilets are located around 15m from the pits and residents fear that sewage may flow into the accumulated water, thus increasing the health risk.Deputy collector of Quepem Rohit Kadam, who is also the chairman of vector borne disease committee and is holding additional charge of chief officer of CCMC, said that he will instruct the Curchorem health centre to carry out the inspection and to take precautionary measure.
