Calangute: The fish markets at Calangute and Candolim wore a deserted look on Saturday, following the ban on fish imports into the state. The ban on fish imports has not impacted tourism, said one restaurant owner, while pointing to the huge demand for other items like chicken biryani and vegetarian food. Only a handful of vendors were seen selling locally caught fish. Some were also seen at the weekly Saturday market behind the Calangute church.Locally caught fish is inadequate to cater to this area that is dotted with hundreds of resorts and hotels.During the annual fishing ban period from June 1 to July 31, most of the seafood stock supplied in the coastal belt of Calangute-Candolim would be sourced from the wholesale market in Margao and the Malim jetty.Madhav Chodankar, owner of a popular fish thali restaurant frequented by locals said that after the recent ban, he sourced fish from a cold storage in Old Goa.Contrary to general belief, seafood is not a big draw with budget tourists who throng the Calangute-Candolim belt.
