Panaji: The Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) will soon be upgrading its main bus stand in Panaji. The total renovation cost is expected to be more than Rs 400 crore, KTC officials said.“The Panaji bus stand only requires renovation. It will take some time, and will be done in a phased manner. We have asked Smart City (Mission) to look into it. We are also trying to do upgradation via the Amrut scheme,” KTC general manager Sanjay Ghate said.He added that before undertaking development works, they will first have to shift the bus stand’s operations elsewhere, rehabilitate the shopkeepers, and figure out an alternate space for existing departures. The Panaji bus terminus sees 3,000 departures each day. The corporation is simultaneously pushing for works at the Mapusa bus stand, which sees 1,700 departures per day.“The Mapusa bus stand is being taken up by the GSIDC. Its drawings have been finalised. The works should start sometime this year,” Ghate said. He also said they are also working on building a bus stand at the Vasco depot, which also will be taken up by the GSIDC. KTC is also planning to start new depots in the state at prominent locations.Work on constructing a new one at Ponda has already started and will be ready by the end of this year, Ghate said. Following which, construction will be taken up at Valpoi and Pernem. This will function like a mini-depot where maintenance can also be done. At present, buses are brought all the way to Panaji or Margao for maintenance.“We also want to shift some buses from Panaji to Ponda. The existing structure cannot keep as many buses. After the depot is ready, we will shift more buses there,” Ghate said.
