Win confidence vote Congress challenges BJP

  • | Wednesday | 19th September, 2018

The Congress is confident of proving its majority on the floor of the House,” he said.In the 40-member House, Congress has 16 MLAs, BJP 14, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and Goa Forward Party (GFP) three each, three independents and one NCP. PANAJI: In a continuation to the fracas building in the state over BJP-led government’s ailing and absent leadership, president, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, Girish Chodankar, on Tuesday, challenged the coalition government to convene an assembly session and win a confidence vote. With three BJP ministers, including chief minister Manohar Parrikar in hospital and one person being the speaker, the actual strength of the BJP has reduced to mere 10 in the assembly, Chodankar said. The Parrikar-led BJP government has the support of MGP, GFP and independents.Chodankar said that if the governor does not act it would mean that she and the BJP are not bothered about the administration, which has completely collapsed and key issues like mining, regional plan, unemployment, formalin in fish are being allowed to linger on without providing any kind of relief to the people of Goa. “In fact, the open statements made by the MGP that they will support only Parrikar as CM is enough proof that the government collapses the minute Parrikar steps down as the CM.The situation is that this ‘government in minority’ should actually be dismissed by the governor and at least now the single largest Congress should be invited to form the government. “I dare them to parade their MLAs.”“The vultures are the BJP, who in minority want to cling to power using their Delhi High-Command and want to capitalise on the health of CM Parrikar,” said Chodankar, adding that when the Congress displays its unity, the BJP maligns it as “vultures trying to grab power at the cost of Parrikar’s health” and spreads rumours that its MLAs are joining the BJP.On Monday, the Congress had staked claim to form the government, which state BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Tendulkar on Tuesday termed a stunt on the part of the party to prevent its MLAs from quitting.Further hitting out at the ruling coalition, which has been unable to reach a consensus on finding a successor to Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, Chodankar said the BJP will not announce any permanent solution right now as no matter whose name is declared to take charge as CM, the resultant discontentment will lead to many MLAs resigning.“The desperation in the BJP right now is because the coalition government has run into minority, having no numbers,” Chodankar said, charging the BJP with buying time to “manufacture majority” even as “political uncertainty” has arisen over their failure to provide a consensus candidate.
