This might be 2018, but Meteora — the inter-collegiate event of Don Bosco College, Panaji, held on Thursday and Friday — took participants and the audience back to a golden age. For, the theme for this year was retro, and harked back to the fashion, lifestyle and philosophy of the 1970s. This is the reason why the dance event recalled the tunes of classics from Bollywood, Hollywood and Goan music. The crowd really appreciated the event, which had been put together by college general secretary Graham Alphonsus and Meteora chairman Kedar Patil with help and guidance from collegeprincipal Cedric Silvera and managerFr Joaquim Lobo. “We loved the friendly atmosphere. The organisers were always at hand to help,” said Shohail Fernandes from Rosary College of Commerce and Arts.THAT ’70s VIBEWith over 10 colleges participating this year, the Battle of the Bands saw the participants pick from a range of evergreen numbers like La Bamba, We Will Rock You and Crazy Little Thing Called Love, amidst loud cheering by the audience. The band TNT, from Chowgule College , bagged the top honours with a spirited rendition of songs like Layla by Eric Clapton and Feeling Good by Nina Simone. “The concept was really interesting and the response from the participants was good. There was a lot of energy in the event. Overall, Meteora was an amazing experience and Don Bosco students organized it really well,” said Niam Leitao from VM Salgoakars of Law.The other event that tapped bigtime into the retro theme was the fashion show, which highlighted attires and characters from yesteryears. The showstoppers from each college went on to contest for Mr and Miss Meteora, the most sought-after titles at the event. The show kicked off with the home college, Don Bosco, putting on a stellar show that wowed the crowd. Their showstoppers were none other than the recently-crowned Mr and Miss Goa, Rahu Rametri and Oshin Colaco, who left everyone amazed with their poise and panache on the ramp. Judged by model Sheetal Mallard, Mr and Miss Meteora saw Damodar College and Don Bosco College of Agriculture winning the titles respectively. “The event was well organised, with very competent judges, and I enjoyed the overall experience!” said Nathan Colaco from Parvatibai Chowgule College.MEMORIES TO TAKE HOMEOther popular fixtures included a round of carpool karaoke, a pre-event that had videos submitted by colleges with lip-synced versions of songs of the ’70s, and Digital Mirror Goa, a new tech zone to create and take home memories with loved ones. There were also food and beverage stalls to keep the crowd refreshed. Most of the participants were very happy to be there. “Meteora 2K18 was a fun event. There were new things to explore, yet other sessions were familiar and enjoyable. I was really happy to be a part of it and represent my college over two days,” said Nishad Hegde Desai from GR Kare College of Law.Finally, at the end of it all, Chowgule College, Margao, bagged the overall prize along with IHM college coming second. The chief guest for the inaugural ceremony was Samiksha Karmalkar Harji, former Miss Goa 2017, who has also acted in short films. The valedictory function was graced by the crew of the yet-to-be-release Goan film, Fake.
