Protest begins in Delhi today to resume mining in state

Last week, Union minister Suresh Prabhu assured the affected families of looking into the possibility of an all-party and stakeholders meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Stoppage of iron ore mining and export in Goa has led to huge loss to the economy, say ministers and activists. Panaji: Nearly a thousand mining dependent individuals from across Goa are set to start a three-day sit-in at the national capital to demand urgent steps for restarting iron ore extraction in the state.Goa Mining People’s Front (GMPF), an umbrella organization of mining-hit families will hold a silent protest at the Ramlila Maidan, Delhi, till December 12 before moving to Jantar Mantar on the final day, trade union leader Puti Gaonkar said. “About 600 people have already reached Delhi and another 150-200 people are on their way,” Gaonkar said while speaking to TOI on Monday from Delhi.All the political parties have expressed their solidarity with the mining dependants and power minister Nilesh Cabral is expected to join the protesters, said sources.Town and Country Planning minister Vijai Sardesai is also slated to meet the affected people in Delhi along with two other Goa Forward MLAs.
