COLVALE: Over 50 structures in the village of Colvale in North Goa are set to be razed to make way for a new expanded highway passing through the village. While the expansion, which will cover 135km of Goa’s roads, will see “minimum structures lost”, this sleepy village will probably see the highest number of demolitions for the project.The fifty structures earmarked for demolition are commercial, residential and religious. In some parts of Goa like Porvorim , authorities are constructing a 3km-long highway on stilts to avoid loss of houses and commercial structures in the densely populated area.In Colvale, there will be an elevated corridor at the Binani junction to save structures.Despite this, officials said that 36 semi-pucca structures are going to be demolished. Five religious structures, including two temples and a chapel, are also going to be razed to make way for the highway. Additionally, three gaddas will also be lost to the work.In all, six pucca structures will face demolition, three of which were found to be encroachments, officials said.Initially, the number of structures to be affected by the project was low, but it has now more than doubled after it was decided that additional area would be required four the highway’s four/six-laning work.“Not all these structures had people residing in them,” an official said. “Some semi-pucca structures are sheds, etc. Wherever the structure is legal, alternative land will be provided.”The highway expansion work will also bring in a new bridge at Colvale.Under the multi-crore highway expansion project, the national highway is slated to be widened from its current two-lane structure to four lanes. This will allow vehicles to cruise at a speed of 80 to 100 kmph.The work will also include vehicular underpasses all along the highway.Hyderabad-based Navyuga constructions has bagged the contract for four-laning the 25km-stretch from Patradevi to Karaswada, which includes Colvale.The Patradevi to Karaswada project has been awarded for Rs 630 crore.This four-laning across Goa will include the roads passing through the villages of Torxem, Tamboxem, Uguem, Poroscodem, Caznem, Pernem , Virnoda, Dhargalim, Colvale, Mapusa, Bastora, Guirim, Porvorim, Panaji , Santa Cruz, Bambolim , Siridao, Palem, Cortalim, Nagoa , Verna, Nuvem, Fatorda, Margao, Navelim, Sirlim, Chinchinim, Panzorconi, Cuncolim, Canacona, Maxem and Polem.The project will link the states of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka starting at Patradevi on the Maharashtra-Goa border to Polem on the Goa-Karnataka border. Its total length will be 135.96km.
