Teltumbde files prearrest bail plea in Pune

It is the prosecution’s case that the alleged provocative speeches by speakers at the Parishad led to the caste clashes at Koregaon Bhima and adjoining villages on January 1, 2018. Anand Teltumbde, one of the accused in the Elgar Parishad case, filed an anticipatory bail application before the special court in Pune on Friday, four days after the Supreme Court dismissed a plea to quash the first information report (FIR) against him on Monday.Teltumbde currently heads the big data analytics programme at the Goa Institute of Management and resides in the state. The Pune police had searched his Goa residence without a warrant on August 28 last year and he was never summoned for investigation till date.Teltumbde has pleaded for bail on the ground that there was no evidence against him.

Special judge K D Vadane has issued a notice to the prosecution/police, directing them to file their written say in the issue and listed the matter for hearing on January 22.Teltumbde’s lawyer Rohan Nahar filed the application as the SC had granted four-week protection to him for seeking bail from the trial court.The bail application read that on August 31, 2018, additional director-general of police Parambir Singh in a press conference in Mumbai had relied and read out certain letters purportedly written by some persons alleging that the applicant (Teltumbde) was a member of a banned Maoist organisation. The letters were not recovered from the accused. Teltumbde had then filed a petition in the Bombay high court for quashing the FIR.The HC dismissed the petition on December 21, 2018. Teltumbde then filed a special leave petition challenging the HC order in the SC, which dismissed it on January 14.It stated that Teltumbde’s name was not mentioned in the FIR, dated January 8, 2018, but his name was mentioned for the first time in a remand report of another accused.
