Heavy vehicles under scanner at Canacona

CANACONA: Canacona deputy collector Sagun Velip has directed the authorities of various departments to inspect the stretch of road from Karmal Ghat to Pollem on February 19 and to identify the different spots where signboards and speed breakers are required to be installed.To discuss the issue of the accident hazard posed to locals by speeding heavy vehicles on this stretch, the deputy collector on Monday convened a meeting at the Poinguinim panchayat premises.Locals raised issues such as speeding by heavy vehicles entering the state, drunken driving, road digging for cable purpose, open roadside shoulders, and trees along roadsides that pose a threat to passers-by, alleging that these are the main causes of various accidents .Velip said that a weighing machine would be provided to check all overloaded heavy vehicles entering Canacona. He also instructed the traffic cell and RTO to put every driver through the breathalyser test, especially at night.Stating that there is no crane in Canacona taluka, locals said that whenever an accident occurs one has to be brought in from Margao , which takes about two hours and results in traffic logjam in the meanwhile. The deputy collector agreed to their demand for a crane .The meeting was attended by South Goa DySP Uttam Raut Dessai and heads of various departments, like traffic cell, police, forest, excise, roads, RTO of Canacona taluka, mamlatdar Raghuraj Faldesai, and sarpanchs and panchs of Loliem and Poinguinim panchayats and ocals from Poinguinim .Goa Congress Secretary Janardhan Bhandari said that there is no proper coordination between various departments of the government.
