PANAJI: The decision of the BJP to engineer the merger of two MGP MLAs with the saffron party indicates that the Pramod Sawant-led coalition government is losing ground and is “desperate” to cling on to power even through “immoral means”, president of Goa Congress Girish Chodankar said.Congress said that the late night political development was a warning for BJP’s political allies that the party was a threat to its own coalition partners.“This is a lesson for MGP and all those who cheated the people by going against the popular mandate. It is a big lesson for all the alliance partners who are supporting this government,” Chodankar said in a broad hint to Goa Forward Party and independent MLAs.“They (BJP) know they cannot sustain this government,” Chodankar said. “They are losing ground and the merger is a clear indication of this. It is an indication that they have lost the confidence of the people.”Congress’ Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes was also expected to resign on Wednesday and subsequently join the BJP, but at the last moment, he is said to have changed his mind.“This is abuse of money power by a frustrated BJP who could not win over the people,” Chodankar said.Congress also said that just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, BJP had proved that it is a threat to all its allies, including its NDA partners all over the country.“Any partnership with BJP will be detrimental to the existence of their own party,” state Congress chief spokesperson Sunil Kawthankar said.When asked if MGP’s decision to contest the Lok Sabha elections in both the constituencies would affect Congress’ chances, Chodankar replied in the negative.
