PANAJI: Reiterating his stand in the ongoing discord between BJP and coalition partner MGP, art and culture minister Govind Gaude on Tuesday said MGP must first withdraw support to the government and then contest by polls. “Being a coalition partner, they cannot contest. The (MGP) president (Pandurang Dhavalikar) is contesting,” Gaude who is an independent MLA said, adding, “He has to withdraw his candidature. After all we have to give a stable government to the people.”Gaude told reporters that he is openly supporting the BJP candidate in Shiroda.“I don’t know who they’re (BJP) afraid of. They should throw them out. If they’re stripped it is the end of MGP,” Gaude said with reference to BJP president Vinay Tendulkar’s statement that the Dhavalikar brothers had assured Union minister Nitin Gadkari of pulling out of the race in contentious constituency. The last few days have seen BJP and MGP crossing swords over MGP president Pandurang Dhavalikar’s adamancy to contest the Shiroda byelection despite one of the conditions put forth during government formation post the demise of former chief minister Manohar Parrikar being that the MGP withdraw from the Shiroda bypoll.Gaude, who had defeated Dhavalikar in the 2017 elections from the Priol constituency, said, “I think there may be vested ambitions behind all this. That’s why they’re contesting. For two years the party enjoyed power,” adding that MGP was going against the BJP to “protect their own interests”. “It is not right.”When asked whether MGP was betraying BJP and who was responsible for the move to contest the election, Gaude said, “The MGP party and their leadership. Who is running MGP? Everybody knows whether it is the committee or the trust that is running the MGP party.”The MGP has remained firm that it will not step aside from Shiroda, one of the three constituencies to go to the bypolls on April 23. Dhavalikar has already begun campaigning in Shiroda. BJP has declared the ticket to former Congress MLA Subhash Shirodkar
