No smartwatches at Goa board’s Class X exam halls

Panaji: The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education will start its Class X exams from Tuesday. The committee later carries out an inquiry into the cases and action is initiated accordingly. The candidates shall not be allowed to leave the examination hall during the first one hour or during the last 10 minutes of the examination,” the board has said.The board also has a malpractices committee to which suspected cases are reported. The board has warned students that they cannot take ‘any electronic gadget in any form’ to the examination hall.While cellphones and calculators were already banned from examination halls, gadgets like smartwatches pose a new challenge.Many state boards like in Karnataka and national boards like CISCE have already prohibited smartwatches from being carried inside examination hall.The board chairman Ramkrishna Samant had then said that the board would discuss about this new challenge for invigilators.This year, the Goa Board has issued instructions to the students appearing for the Class X public exams by expanding its ban beyond cellphones as an added precaution against malpractices.“Candidates are forbidden to take any book or part of book/mobile phone/wireless set/calculator and any electronic gadget in any form/water bottle having label/supporting pad for writing/scribbled material in the examination hall. In case of default they shall be punished under prevailing rules,” the board has said.The Class X public exam will be taken by 18,726 students across 28 centres in the state starting from April 2.The state has been successful in keeping cellphones out of the examination halls and students caught cheating in the state have mostly been seen using conventional methods of cheating.“The candidate shall not whisper, talk, converse or communicate in any manner with other candidates in the examination hall, failing which penal action against the candidate shall be taken,” the board’s instructions to students state.The state board also has vigilance squads in place to keep a check on malpractices during the exam.“Rough work if any, shall be done in pencil on the left side of the pages of the answer book/supplement, and not on the question paper or anywhere else.
