Four Classic Card Games That Are Here to Stay

The Chinese invented playing cards sometime before 1000 AD, and their card games eventually reached Europe in the 14th century. Since then, cards have become one of the world’s most popular pastimes. Here is a look at four classic games that are here to stay.

Texas Hold ‘em

The card game of poker was invented sometime in the early 19th century in the United States. It has since grown into one of the most popular pastimes around the world, and there are various types of poker you can play. Texas hold ‘em is undoubtedly one of the most popular poker games. Although little is known about the card game’s development, it is thought to have originated in Robstown, Texas, in the early 1900s. After Texas hold ‘em was introduced into Las Vegas casinos in the 1960s, it soon developed into a global phenomenon. Today, you can play the game at home amongst friends, at casinos or on the internet, such as at this online casino in India, where you can play a variety of card games, slot games and table games.

The game involves two cards known as hole cards being dealt face down to each player. Then five cards are dealt face-up, over three stages. Each player tries to get the best five-card poker hand he or she can from any combination of the cards on the table and his or her hole cards. You can check, call, raise, or fold during each hand. The player with the best hand at the end of the betting rounds wins the pot.

Knock-out Whist

The classic English card game whist first became popular in the 18th century, but it is actually a descendant of a 16th-century card game called trump, triumph or ruff. Whist developed into several variations. One of the most popular is knock-out whist.

The object of the card game is to be the last player standing. Each player receives seven cards, and a card from the pack is turned face-up. In the first round, this becomes the trump suit. In subsequent rounds, the winner of the previous round gets to pick the trump suit. The player who matches the suit with the highest-numbered card wins the round. But if you play the highest-numbered trump in a round, you automatically win that round. After each player’s seven cards have been played, players who have not achieved any tricks are removed from the game.

Contract Bridge

Contract bridge, also known as simply bridge, developed out of whist. The modern game emerged from several stages from around 1890 to 1930, which included bridge-whist and auction bridge. The game’s developments mainly occurred in New York and London. Its popularity rose in the 1930s thanks to its publicity by the American player and tournament organiser Ely Culbertson. During that decade, Anglo-American matches received a tremendous amount of publicity via cinema, newspapers and radio.

Two pairs of players play against each other. The game consists of several deals, and each deal goes through four phases: the dealing of the cards, the auction, the playing of the hands, and the scoring of the results. Millions of people around the world play bridge for fun or compete in global tournaments.

Crazy Eights

The popular Crazy Eights card game developed in the 1930s, when it was known as just “Eights”. The name Crazy Eights comes from the 1940s. It refers to the US army’s designation for the discharge of mentally unstable soldiers: Section 8.

The object of the game is to become the first player to get rid of all your cards. Two to seven players can play, but when there are more than five players, two standard decks of cards are used instead of just one. Each player is dealt seven cards. The remaining cards are known as the “stock”. The top card is then turned face-up. Players take it in turns to lay a card on top of the present face-up card which matches either the card’s suit or number. When a player is unable to do that, he or she must take a card from the stock. Here is where the eights come in: they are wild. That means you can play them at any time, regardless of the suit or number of the card currently in play.
