Panaji: In a major boost for the state's ability to stand tall among the world's information and technology giants, Goa Electronics Limited (GEL) has been certified by US-based CMMI Institute. The Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) certificate makes GEL one of the few public sector undertakings in the country to be recognized for software development excellence. GEL now joins the ranks of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Infosys Limited, Wipro Limited, Cognizant Technology Solutions India Private Limited.GEL began the process of attaining CMMI certification a year earlier. "There were various process areas where gaps were seen. Such process areas were scaled up," GEL chief executive officer Revati Mazumdar said.The CMMI certificate for software development is a process-level improvement training and appraisal program undertaken the by CMMI Institute. The certification process was developed at the Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute."It is a big thing for a PSU to step into this domain. Due to lack of this certification, we lost out in technical bids in other states. We now want to compete in big tenders outside Goa," Mazumdar said.The CMMI program, which is currently used by over 5,000 organizations from more than 70 countries worldwide, provided guidelines and recommendations for GEL to help identify problems and improve its performance."Now, with GEL being a CMMI certified organisation, it will ensure that the software we develop is of international standards and the best in the market. Additionally, well established standards and procedures for coding ensures development of a system with fewer bugs," Mazumdar said.
