Mayor Madhu Azad said, “I rejected a suggestion of placing a single statue of Guru Dronacharya in front of the deputy commissioner’s office. GURUGRAM: The MCG Mayor and the commissioner are in lockdown on where to install the statues of Guru Dronacharya — after whom the government renamed the city Gurugram — and his students, the five Pandava princes from the epic Mahabharata. The height of the Guru’s statue may be increased from 6ft to 9ft, while the statues of the Pandavas will be 5ft each. “We want them to be made of stone,” added Azad.Meanwhile, commissioner Yashpal Yadav, who promised to re-install the statues this month, said, “A single statue of Guru Dronacharya will be installed near the deputy commissioner’s office. GURUGRAM: The MCG Mayor and the commissioner are in lockdown on where to install the statues of Guru Dronacharya — after whom the government renamed the city Gurugram — and his students, the five Pandava princes from the epic Mahabharata. They have cited different places where the statues will be re-installed this month. On January 19, TOI had reported that a 30-year-old installation, containing the statues of the Guru and his protégés, had gone missing from a park near Rajiv Chowk. They were found the next day, lying in a MCG-run plant nursery. But the Guru’s statue was missing its left palm and right index finger, possibly damaged while being shifted, as the park made way for the Rajiv Chowk underpass on the expressway.During the third MCG House meeting in March, councillors decided the Guru and his students will get new statues. But that’s where differences between the city’s two top officials — over their cost and location — emerged. Mayor Madhu Azad said, “I rejected a suggestion of placing a single statue of Guru Dronacharya in front of the deputy commissioner’s office. If the statues are to be re-installed, it has to be with the Pandavas. I’ve asked my office to place them in front of Ambience Mall, to make them visible.”“The artisans we spoke to said the new statues will cost around Rs 1.5-2 crore,” said Azad. We can’t place it in front of Ambience Mall, as it will be close to the highway, which is against Supreme Court orders. The sculptor who promised to donate the statues was travelling, but he’s back. They are almost ready, only their pedestal remains to be made. Since they’re being donated, we aren’t paying anything,” said Yadav.
