Rain to keep mercury down this weekend

The Met department has predicted rains for the next three days. “This was the heaviest spell of rain since the monsoons reached the capital on June 28,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, scientist at the Met office. The average for the month is 210.6mm.The district administration has been put on high alert after heavy rainfall in the city. “We expect some rain activity on Saturday and Sunday as well, but the intensity will be much lower and only light rain is likely.”Before the downpour on Friday, Delhi had received a total of 64.3mm of rainfall since the beginning of July. GURUGRAM/ DELHI: The first day of heavy monsoon showers brought relief from high humidity levels but also showed how quickly roads in NCR cave in to weather.An hour-long spell of rain triggered waterlogging in several areas of the city on Friday afternoon, with Gurugram-Faridabad Road, MG Road, Rajiv Chowk and Shankar Chowk among the most affected. On Sohna Road and in Old Gurugram, the showers were moderate, residents said.The maximum and minimum temperature was recorded at 33 degrees Celsius, down by nearly 10 degrees because of the showers, and 28 degrees Celsius in Gurugram. The Met department has predicted rains for the next three days. “While Friday rains has brought down the maximum temperature to 33 degrees, the mercury is expected to rise after Sunday,” said a Met department official.In Delhi, by 5.30pm, the Safdarjung observatory, whose records are taken as the base for the capital’s weather, had recorded 53.6mm of rainfall. Sub-divisional magistrate Sanjeev Singla said that the administration was well prepared to handle any situation and increased number of traffic cops had been deployed on roads. The disaster management department is also set to meet any requirements. The irrigation department has been asked to keep tools to pump out water. “MCG has been asked to carry out de-silting and dredging work at Badshapur drain. Huda and GMDA too is ready to deal with any alarming situation,” Singla said.
