To demand upgrade, villagers in Nuh lock school of 1,000 students

GURUGRAM: Residents of Nuh’s Tapkan village have locked up the high school, seeking its upgradation to the senior secondary level.The education department has sought a 15-day timeframe for the school to be upgraded but villagers and students said the school would stay closed till they received an assurance in writing.The school has a strength of 1,050 students. Head master Basruddin Khan said, “Villagers and students put a lock at the main door on Monday. They are not allowing anyone inside the school.”The school boasts a good academic record with majority of the Class 10 students scoring around 75% this year.Tapkan sarpanch Taj Mohammad said that the only senior secondary school in the vicinity was 8 kms away from the village in Nuh city and students had to go there for higher studies.Mohammad said, “Muslims are the majority community in this village. Since the senior secondary school is far away, many parents don’t send their daughters for higher studies and their education ends here. Our demand is that this high school be upgraded to the senior secondary level.”The education department officials said that they would upgrade the school but villagers were not trying to understand the situation. Who is going to take the responsibility for this? Kids don’t know what they are doing but villagers are leading this protest,” said Majeed.Nuh figured at the bottom of Niti Aayog’s recent list of 101 most backward districts in the country. The report said that the two major contributors to its backwardness were poor ratings in the health and education sectors.Sahanwal, a Class 10 student, said, “The upgradation of the school is important. If it does not happen, many girls will be forced to leave their studies. I want to study and become a doctor.”
