Jawan falls prey to ATM card cloning, Rs 2 lakh withdrawn from account

He was told that Rs 2 lakh was withdrawn from his account in January. The statement showed that the withdrawal of Rs 2 lakh had taken place between January 11 and 12 through eight transactions. It was followed by four cash withdrawal of Rs 60,000 (total) from an ATM in Bajghera, Gurugram. Rs 80,000 was transferred to an account in Rajasthan, and transaction worth Rs 40,000 was also done using the ATM.While filing his complaint on Thursday, Singh said that the ATM card was in his possession. He wanted to withdraw money and lend it to his friend. But, the bank declined his cheque claiming insufficient balance.Shocked, Singh asked the bank official for an elaborate explanation for refusing to encash his cheque. He was told that Rs 2 lakh was withdrawn from his account in January. He immediately lodged a complaint with the bank giving proof that as he was posted in Lucknow in January, he had not carry out the transaction.It took him months to get the transaction details from the bank. The statement showed that the withdrawal of Rs 2 lakh had taken place between January 11 and 12 through eight transactions. “I came to know about the withdrawal months later. I had lost my mobile phone in January and therefore received no notification on the transactions,” said Singh.As per the complaint filed at the Bajghera police station, Rs 20,000 was withdrawn in the intervening night of January and 11 and 12. It was followed by four cash withdrawal of Rs 60,000 (total) from an ATM in Bajghera, Gurugram. Rs 80,000 was transferred to an account in Rajasthan, and transaction worth Rs 40,000 was also done using the ATM.While filing his complaint on Thursday, Singh said that the ATM card was in his possession. An FIR was registered under sections 420 (cheating) and 379 (theft) of the IPC.“Prima facie it looks like a case of card cloning. We have started our investigation,” said a police officer.
