Endangered bird sighted in Gurugram

Monakar said, “We were looking for rain quails and noticed an unusual activity near a ‘bajra’ field. Suddenly, a bird took flight but we clicked a photo. We never expected to see a Lesser Florican.” Birders said the species might be breeding in the area, which would be a record. It usually breeds in the Shokaliya grasslands of Rajasthan Some claimed to have heard the bird’s call. The male bird jumps up to 15 feet while calling. “The call is by a male to attract a female during breeding season. So, we are hopeful of its breeding,” said Ganguly. Two birders, Harish Tangaraj and Sudesha, claimed to have spotted the b ird on July 5. “We couldn’t click photos but we were sure it was a Lesser Florican,” said Tangaraj.Lesser Florican is one of the four bustard species found in India.
