Vendors cry harassment by cops, take to streets

GURUGRAM: Around 200 street vendors from the city took out a rally from Mini Secretariat to old MCG office on Monday, protesting against the alleged harassment , verbal abuses and extortion they face at the hands of cops and civic authorities.Many street vendors who took part in the rally said MCG has failed to implement provisions of the Street Vendor (protection of livelihood and regulation for street vending) Act, 2014.“Following the notification of the policy in 2015, street vendors had protested for 15 days for its implementation and the then MCG commissioner had agreed to the same. However, after three years, the rules haven’t been notified yet,” said Rajender Singh from Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).Many street vendors said after having stayed at the same spot for years, they were being asked to move. “I have been putting up a stall on MG Road for eight years now. Some days back, some cops came and asked for free food. When I refused, they abused me verbally and came back to damage my stall and take away my stuff,” said Kanti Tiwari.She added that she was called to the police station where she was verbally abused and asked to never return.Bablu, who has been putting up his stall in Udyog Vihar for the last five to six years, said, “Cops come and ask us for free food and if we deny, they find different ways to harass us. They damage the stalls and give threaten us.”The group of vendors has been trying to reach the MCG officials for a while now in the same regard, they said.The MCG has allotted some stalls under the act, but, officials said, that it is currently only a pilot.“We had covered seven sectors in the pilot and now we have covered 19 sectors. We are sure that within the next six months, we will be able to cover the entire city,” said Mahender Singh, city project officer, MCG. He added that while the vendors have a right to earn, but they shouldn’t restrict roads or create trouble.
