STF headhunts tech-savvy cops to track down new-age criminals

At least 1,400 constables joined Gurgaon police in June.Several highly-qualified youths have been recruited, this time, including 3,827 from rural and 398 from urban areas, a release said.

GURUGRAM: At least 100 computer engineering graduates, who were recently recruited by the Haryana government as constables , will join the cyber cell of the special task force ( STF ), Haryana.These technically qualified cops will help STF track down gangsters who have been adopting newer technologies to escape its net.The selected group will be trained in technical surveillance and policing. “They will be nurtured to become tech-friendly cops with the best technological knowledge to track criminals,” said DIG (STF) Satheesh Balan.A proposal for the project has been approved by the director general of police . As many as 85 constables will join the STF soon and the remaining 15 will join in the coming months.Balan said that the new recruits, attached with the STF cyber cell, would be posted to four different areas in Haryana.“This time, many highly-qualified youths have joined the police force and after assessing them, we have selected 100 candidates for the STF cyber cell,” he said, adding that all the cops would be trained in the latest technologies to give more teeth to the department.Haryana Staff Selection Commission had earlier released a notification to fill 4,225 constable posts. They include two MPhil, 15 MTech, 16 MCA, 36 MBA, 33 MSc., 38 MCom, 103 MA, 273 BTech., 51 BCA, 3 LLB, 434 BSc., 215 BCom and 844 BA degree holders, 23 diploma holders, 65 10+2 pass with JBT qualification, two ITI fitter and polytechnic, and 2,028 10+2 pass.STF which was primarily formed to deal with organised crime and gangsters has limited manpower and the new recruits will help strenthen the force.“Criminals have become tech-savvy and are using latest technologies for operating their gangs, remaining in touch with gang members while on the run, and making extortion calls,” said a senior STF official, adding that along with developing human intelligence and traditional policing, STF has to improve its surveillance technology.“Many gangsters have stopped using mobile phones to avoid tracking. Checking call records have become futile as criminals are now using different platforms and apps to make calls,” said the officer, adding that it had become important to stay updated with the latest technologies to be a step ahead of the criminals.In the past three months, STF has nabbed at least eight gangsters, including Sampat Nehra who was making extensive use of social media, and dreaded criminal Pradeep Lohar. “Along with human intelligence, technical surveillance played a big role in cracking these cases,” said the officer.Balan said the selected constables would be posted directly with STF and kept away from regular policing. “They will be here from Day 1 so we can mould them as per the requirements of the force,” said Balan.
