Such has been the success of the drive that the ‘Yamraj’ recently got hold of Ambala former deputy mayor Sudhir Jaiswal.Ambala traffic in-charge Manish Kumar says the initiative has been taken to make people understand that they should fear death if they are riding a two-wheeler without a helmet. “Our motive is not to scare people, but to educate them. In most cases, commuters do not wear helmets. That is why we are encouraging them to wear helmets,” says Kumar.Jaiswal calls the initiative by traffic police a good one. “There are many people who do not obey traffic rules. Unfortunately, I too landed in a situation where I could wear the helmet. I have promised the Yamraj that I would wear a helmet everytime I ride a two-wheelers from now on,” Jaiswal says.Two of the busiest national highways in the country, Number 1 and 21, pass through Ambala. With awareness lacking among residents, many motorists disobey traffic rules in the Haryana town. More than 30 people have been killed in road accidents in Ambala in the past one month.4 black spots in townHaryana Vision Zero and Ambala district administration have identified four black spots in the town, including the crossing on NH 1, opposite Jaggi filling station; Sultanpur turn, Shastri Colony turn, and Zila Sainik Board turn. They have also identified three critical spots — Saha Chowk, Aggarsain Chowk in Naraingarh, and Maharana Pratap Chowk in Barara. Two roads — Ambala-Hisar and Mullana -Jagadhri — are also being checked.
