There was a time when Gurgaon’s Mall Mile MG Road – was one of the trendiest spots in all of NCR . It was the place to be if you wanted to party or have a nice meal after a late-night movie. This was, of course, before the place developed a bad rap due to the countless cases of molestation, prostitution , and abductions reported from the area. On it’s part, the Gurgaon Police has attempted to stay on top of MG Road’s growing crime rate through regular raids and surprise checks – be it for underage drinking, violation of closing deadline or prostitution. July alone has seen three such raids in the area. However, pub owners say these constant raids lead to their already hurt businesses being adversely affected further. Every new raid in the area is like déjà vu – with the two sides maintain the same stance. It is an administrative boxing match that has seen more rounds than people can count.“We have formed a dozen teams to conduct checks across the city with a special focus on MG Road. Strict action would be taken if any outlet is found involved in any form of illegal trade,” said HC Dahiya, Deputy Excise Commissioner, Gurgaon, after Gurgaon Police and Excise Department announced increased vigil and raids in the area earlier this month“We received a lot of complaints of brawls on weekends. Several people were booked, particularly on weekends at MG Road. In view of this, all senior officers were directed to conduct special operations in the area,” said Gurgaon Police Commissioner KK Rao after the police raided several pubs in the area andarrested 45 people last month“We have all the required permissions and licenses to run a club. If a woman comes to our club and chooses to dance with a man, there isn’t much we can do about it. The recent raids are unjustified,” said a pub owner after police conducted two raids in two weeks at over 24 pubs in the area to check prostitution earlier this month“Our business is down as patrons don’t want to come here because of the constant raids. Nobody wants to risk getting arrested. We are doing all we can to co-operate, but the police is hurting our business regardless," said a pub employee said last month
