54 prisoners attend 45-day-long course, turn yoga trainers

GURUGRAM: A total of 54 jail inmates, serving terms in different jails across Haryana, were part of the first batch of the 45-day-long ‘Yoga Teacher Training’ course at Bhondsi jail , the first such initiative in the state. Regular yoga sessions will be organised in jails,” Prasad said.The course, which was especially designed for prisoners, includes practical as well as theoretical classes. The programme was organised by NGOs India Vision Foundation, Panchvati Yoga Ashram and Nature Cure Centre in affiliation with World Yoga Organisation, according to Bhondsi jail superintendent Jai Kishan Chillar. Yoga helps prisoners immensely as it works towards reduce stress levels and negative thoughts,” Chillar said. He further said at the convocation programme, the inmates performed a bhajan they had themselves written and composed.

The participants were provided certificates on Sunday after completion of the course and can practise as yoga trainers after their release, officials said.The inmates will now go back to their respective prisons and give yoga lessons to inmates. Additional chief secretary (homes and prisons) SS Prasad and director general of prisons K Sevlvaraj handed over the certificates to the trained inmates in a convocation ceremony on Sunday.“Similar programmes will be conducted in all jails of Haryana. Regular yoga sessions will be organised in jails,” Prasad said.The course, which was especially designed for prisoners, includes practical as well as theoretical classes. The programme was organised by NGOs India Vision Foundation, Panchvati Yoga Ashram and Nature Cure Centre in affiliation with World Yoga Organisation, according to Bhondsi jail superintendent Jai Kishan Chillar. Chillar, who is himself a national-level yoga trainer, said the participants included seven inmates of Bhondsi jail.“Convicts who had passed Class 10 and had an interest in yoga were selected for the programme,” said Chillar.adding that they were kept in a separate barrack in the jail. Yoga instructors conducted sessions in morning and evening, along with theoretical classes.“Now, they are certified yoga instructors, and the certificate will also help them in earning their livelihood after they are released from jail. Yoga helps prisoners immensely as it works towards reduce stress levels and negative thoughts,” Chillar said. He further said at the convocation programme, the inmates performed a bhajan they had themselves written and composed. “The bhajan was on the theme of ‘Apradhi se yogi ban gaye’ (from criminal to saint),” said Chillar.
