4 water tanks in city not cleaned for 3 years: RTI

Gurgaon: Four water tanks in the city have not been cleaned for the past three years, according to an RTI response.According to norms, water tanks should be cleaned once every three months.In response to an RTI query, Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has informed that the water tanks were last cleaned in early 2015. But the authorities couldn’t even fulfil the promise that they made last year.”Residents demanded immediate cleaning of the tanks which supply drinking water, saying unclean tanks could lead to several diseases.“It is shocking to know that the water tanks have not been cleaned for years. So, I don’t think that the drinking water is contaminated,” said a source.More than 50 tanks supply drinking water to sectors 30, 31, 32, 39, 40, 45, 14, and 15. It is true that the water tanks have not been cleaned but regular chlorination is carried out. In response to another RTI application last year, the development authority had also informed that the water tanks in sectors 5, 12 and 18 were last cleaned in 2013 and those in sectors 21, 22, 23 and 23A were last cleaned in 2011.Aseem Takyar said, “The authorities are putting health of residents at stake.

These include a water tank near Ajanta Public School in Sector 31, another near the GMDA office in Sector 32, and the third one at plot number 901 in Sector 39, and the last one near Sector 15 (Part II).Aseem Takyar , who filed the RTI application, said that residents were being forced to drink water stored in unclean tanks.Last year, Huda had set March 2019 as the deadline to clean all underground and overhead water tanks in the city. In response to another RTI application last year, the development authority had also informed that the water tanks in sectors 5, 12 and 18 were last cleaned in 2013 and those in sectors 21, 22, 23 and 23A were last cleaned in 2011.Aseem Takyar said, “The authorities are putting health of residents at stake. We pay regular taxes and maintenance charges. That is why every year we witness an increase in waterborne diseases, even in the winter season. My six-year-old son suffered from typhoid twice last year,” said Divya Rana, a city-based resident.Sources in GMDA claimed the maintenance of some of the water tanks had been handed over to MCG.“As most of the sectors have been transferred to MCG, several tanks have also been handed over. It is true that the water tanks have not been cleaned but regular chlorination is carried out. So, I don’t think that the drinking water is contaminated,” said a source.More than 50 tanks supply drinking water to sectors 30, 31, 32, 39, 40, 45, 14, and 15.
