GURUGRAM: At least nine thefts in the last fortnight have left residents of Suncity Township worried. In the most recent case, thieves broke into an apartment (F-109) and fled with cash and valuables on Monday.Police, however, said only three FIRs had been registered. The SHO of the Sector 53 police station said that police had no clues yet.RWA members told TOI that their neighbourhood was becoming unsafe and blamed intruders who had been found drinking in the open in the township.“I had been out for five days and came back on Sunday evening to find that my balcony’s railing had been damaged. The thieves fled with cash and an SLR camera,” said Abid Ali, who lives in the F-109 apartment. “I cannot say the exact date of the theft but I lodged a complaint on Sunday. Police are yet to give me the copy of the FIR.”On August 15, there was another theft at D-38. Apartment owner Ashish Mishra, said, “I was out from 5-11.45pm. After I returned, I realised that my door was locked from inside. I went to call the security guards but none of them were at the gates. I called cops who had to break into the house. We found that everything had been ransacked. The thieves had taken cash and jewellery.”VMK Singh, president, Sun City RWA, said that at least nine thefts had taken place in the township over the last fortnight. Thefts have been reported from E-37, D-44, C1-17, B-77, F-104, F-109, D-38, D-66 and B-79.Singh said that this was happening due to the lack of security in the township. “The entire township has 16-17 guards. Besides, we have no street lights,” he said. “Another big problem is that people come here to drink alcohol. People often drink in the open in blocks G, B10 and others.”Mishra said that the security guards themselves were inadequately equipped. “They don’t have torches or weapons. They won’t be able to overpower thieves, even if they catch them. They are just armed with a lathi.”Abid Ali said, “After the theft, I came to know that Suncity has this system in which you are supposed to make the security guards aware about your departure in advance so that the security around your apartment can be beefed up.”Police said that the crime, technical and forensic teams were working on the cases.“We are looking for clues. The problem is compounded by the fact that there is no CCTV footage. No cameras have been installed yet and the security system is inadequate. We have also deployed two personnel to stroll around the township. It is very wide and has the Aravalis behind, making it vulnerable. Also, residents leave their apartments without informing anyone and leave tell-tale signs about their absence. For instance, anyone can come and find a bundle of uncollected newspapers outside such residences,” said a police officer.
