This was the situation facing a couple from Bahadurgarh The couple, businessman Chanchal Chawla (30) and his wife Suman Chawla (29), were living in China for an extended period on a business trip when they became aware of the problem. But the language barrier prevented them from seeking accurate medical advice. Eventually, they returned home, and got relief at a private hospital in Gurugram. And not a moment too soon, according to doctors there.The couple has two daughters, four and six years of age, both from Caesarian sections.Finally, on August 30, she was operated upon by Dr Alka Kriplani, Padamshree awardee and former professor in AIIMS, who heads the department of gynaecology in Paras Hospital. She told TOI, “The couple was lucky as their problem was diagnosed at the initial stage through ultrasound and the foetus could be removed through laparoscopic management within two days of operation... With a rise in C-sections, there is also a significant rise in risk of developing Caesarean scar ectopic pregnancies.”Dr Suman Lal, senior consultant, obstetrics and gynaecology, Max Hospital, said, “In such cases, there is no option but to abort the pregnancy. Such couples can always plan another pregnancy after the scar heals, but must abort the scar ectopic pregnancy. They must take extreme caution to ensure baby is implanted right because patients with scar ectopic pregnancies have high probability of scar rupture on advancement of pregnancy, so early intervention and consultation with doctor who is conversant with previous history is advisable.”
