GURUGRAM: Call it a Gurujam effect. The number of traffic policemen in the city has increased almost three-fold in the past one and a half years — from 330 in January 2017 to 900 now. These 900 policemen include over 150 homeguards and special police officers. Until the beginning of 2017, there were only 330 traffic cops to manage over 20 lakh vehicles in the city on a daily basis. The Gurujam in 2016 had caught the attention of the state authorities and highlighted the need to strengthen the traffic police force in the city. The traffic police department is now working towards better human resources management and increasing efficiency of its staff. The field deployment has been increased across the main roads of the city, and mid-duty breaks are being allowed to cops as well. All this is expected to have a spillover effect on traffic management. This has improved the monitoring on the roads, as well as improved the working conditions of policemen. Previously, traffic cops were working on a 14-hour shift— from 7am to 9pm and 7 pm to 9am. At times, the day shifts would continue till night and even next morning. However, now the shifts have been reduced to 8 to 10 hours. Now over 750 cops have been posted for field duties. Of this, over 500 cops have fixed spots across Gurugram, and another 250 cops will work on a rotational basis. They will also fill in for the permanent cops who are now allowed a break of 1-2 hours.“Since July, we have introduced the new shift system to manage our resources in a better way, which, in turn, will improve efficiency and decrease stress levels. Our ultimate aim is to have a better traffic flow,” said Sulochana Gajaraj, DCP (traffic), Gurugram.
