GURUGRAM: Residents of Sector 56 are a fearful lot these days as attacks by monkeys in the area have increased. Over the last week, monkeys have allegedly become aggressive and harassed residents very often. A 71-year-old woman was attacked by two monkeys when she was out for a walk.Over 1,000 people live in around 570 flats in Huda plots in the sector. “We raised the issue with MCG in April, and they sent monkey catchers. At that time, we had just 4-5 monkeys here. As soon as we made some progress, some animal rights activists intervened and intimidated the catchers,” said Sudhir Bhardwaj, RWA president, Sector 56, Huda plots. “Now, the monkey population has tripled and we are at the receiving end of their aggressive behaviour,” he added.Residents said monkeys enter houses and climb terraces, opening the lids of water tanks and diving inside for a bath. “Last week, two monkeys entered a neighbour’s house and they couldn’t enter their kitchen for the whole day,” said Navdeep Khanna, a resident.TOI spoke to Kishan Yadav, whose 71-year-old mother was attacked by monkeys last week. “She was out for a stroll in a park near our house when two monkeys attacked her. A neighbour shooed them away and saved her. While my mother thankfully didn’t suffer any fractures, she got bruises all over and is bedridden ever since,” Yadav said.Meanwhile, animal rights activists said MCG is deploying unauthorised agencies to catch the simians, which isn’t allowed as per norms. Amit Chaudhary, the animal rights activist who had intervened when a team was sent to the sector, said: “ We simply urged the residents to rope in a monkey catcher authorised by the district forest officer. We are not against monkey catching, we just want it to be done with in the ambit of laws.”When approached by TOI, a senior MCG official said, “MCG has recently hired a new monkey catching team from Mathura, which is authorised for the job. Residents should file an official complaint with us, and we will act accordingly.”
