GURUGRAM: Northern Railways has completely revamped Farrukhnagar railway station . The renovation work was finished in a span of five months at a cost of around Rs 3 crore. The renovation has been done keeping in mind the station’s history, officials said. A railway line for steam engines started from New Delhi to Farrukhnagar on February 14, 1873 from this station. The station building deteriorated with time. Deepika Gill, assistant divisional engineer, Delhi Sarai Rohilla, said: “When Ashwani Lohani became the chairman of Indian Railways , he visited this station and inspired us to restore it and give it a heritage look. It was planned to make this station a hub of social activities. We have restored the old dilapidated railway quarters and the station area, planted more than 3,000 saplings, developed an amphitheatre, ‘akhara’, kabaddi ground, volleyball court, community shelter and shed. We have also provided portable toilets, a tubewell and a 5,000-litre underground tank.”When the renovation work was in progress, railway officials found that there was no water available in the station. “Farrukhnagar water is salty, and no source of drinking water was available at station. We have taken a water connection from the public health engineering department and spent Rs 40 lakh only on the water pipeline,” Gill added. Red sandstone and special bricks were used to give the station a traditional look.“Red sandstone has been used for the floors. The history of Farrukhnagar and name of station have been written on a separate red stone, which was specially ordered. Instead of normal bricks, brick tiles were brought especially from Rajasthan. Arches have also been constructed to add to the look,” Gill said. After the revamp , the community centre is often visited by villagers, who use the free Wi-Fi available within its premises. “The Railway is developing a park, where villagers can avail free medical care and routine health check-up facilities like ECG, blood and urine test,” a statement released by Northern Railway said.
