GURUGRAM: An undertrial, 22, got into a tractor trailer carrying garbage, hid under the trash and fled Bhondsi jail on Friday afternoon — the board daylight escape exposing glaring gaps in security and brazen laxity on part of prison guards.Jail officials got a whiff of a possible breakout hours later, during a headcount in the evening, and their worst fear came true when they scanned footage of CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the jail premises.By then, Amit Kumar , accused in a case of rape and abduction, who had been lodged in the high-security jail under judicial custody since September 15, had disappeared.Amit, alias Deepu, originally from Uttar Pradesh , was also facing charges under the SC/ST Act registered at Sector 37 police station. He was staying in the barrack No. 3B and was supposed to appear for the next hearing on September 29.Later, barrack in-charge Kuldeep Singh, head warder Azad Singh, warders Rohtas and Nadan, and two sanitation workers, who took the garbage tractor out of the jail, have been suspended for negligence.Preliminary inquiry revealed that a special cleanness driver was carried out on the jail premises on Friday, wherein most of the inmates were asked to clean the compound and collect the waste on a tractor trolley. Along with others, Amit also took part in the drive. Around 1.30pm, once the cleaning was over and all other inmates headed to their respective cells, Amit climbed into the trolley and covered himself with the trash. Then, two sanitation workers Ved Prakash and Om Pal drove the tractor out of the premises and unloaded the trash by simply lifting the hydraulic-fit trolley at a designated dump yard adjacent to the jail boundary, without sparing a glance at the discard.Later, while scanning the CCTV footage in the evening, the jail officials watched in utter shock the inmate emerging from the waste mound and running away. The CCTVs had also captured him while he was hiding under the garbage but there was no jail official to monitor the display screens live in the control room. After internal investigation, deputy superintendent of police (prisons) Sajid Khan filed a complaint at Bhondsi police station and recommended legal action against the barrack in-charge, the head warder, the two warders and the two sanitation workers for negligence.Based on his complaint, an FIR has been registered against all the seven, including Amit, under sections 223 (escape from custody negligently suffered by public servant), 224 (resistance or obstruction to lawful apprehension of another person) of the IPC.Dinesh Kumar Yadav, ACP, Sohna, said a special police team had been formed to trace down the inmate.“The role of the two sanitation workers as well as the warders is under scanner. They will be called for questioning soon.“We have also sought the CCTV footage from the jail, even as our team is conducting raids to nab the inmate. He will be arrested soon,” said the ACP.
