5-year-old girl died of diphtheria: Health dept

Another suspected diphtheria case has also come to light after the death of a four-year-old girl, who also suffered symptoms matching those of diphtheria, in the city on October 1. GURUGRAM: The health department on Wednesday confirmed diphtheria to be the cause of death of a five-year-old girl, who died on September 11 in her native village of Dayalpur in Uttar Pradesh . According to Nazneen’s parents, the girl stayed with her grandparents in Dayalpur village in UP, while they resided in Badshapur. Nazneen (5) had fallen ill on August 30 after she had come to the city to visit her parents. As there was no improvement in her condition, doctors referred her to Civil Hospital, from where she was sent to AIIMS in Delhi.

As she was suffering from fever , her parents took her to a local hospital. As there was no improvement in her condition, doctors referred her to Civil Hospital, from where she was sent to AIIMS in Delhi. As doctors in AIIMS suspected it to be a diphtheria case, they asked her parents to take her to Maharishi Valmiki Hospital.After being discharged, Nazneen was taken to her village where she breathed her last on September 11.In a similar case, a four-year-old girl succumbed to symptoms matching those of diphtheria on October 1 in SGT Medical College Hospital and Research Institute.According to her parents, Pari was undergoing treatment at a local hospital for swelling in throat, fever and cough. As her condition showed no improvement, she was referred to SGT Medical College on October 1 where she died during treatment.With the first confirmed case coming to fore, the health department has set up a team, who would visit slums in the city and ensure that children are vaccinated for the disease.
